Paul grew up in Perth and completed his Medicine degree at the University of Western Australia where he graduated with Honours in 2000. He undertook his internship and residency at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth and was selected for the Advanced Training Programme in Orthopaedic Surgery in Western Australia in 2006. Upon successfully completing his training he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Australian Orthopaedic Association. In 2010 he commenced his practice as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. During 2010 and 2011 he underwent further training in Europe. He was the first Surgeon from Australia to be selected for Knee & Shoulder Fellowships at the Sports Surgery Clinic in Dublin, Ireland which he completed under Mr Ray Moran and Mr Hannan Mullett. He treated elite level athletes including players from the Ireland Rugby team, Gaelic footballers and hurlers. He also completed several observerships in Europe during his fellowship overseas.

He joined the Coastal Orthopaedic Group in 2012. He is based at Bethesda Hospital in Claremont and St John of God Murdoch. He continues to provide services to the Peel region for both private and public patients and regularly consults and operates at the Peel Health Campus. A significant proportion of his workload includes Workers Compensation injuries. He is qualified to deal with the entire journey of the injured worker from First Medical Certificate to Permanent Impairment Assessment.

His main areas of interest are shoulder & knee conditions, joint replacements (including knee, hip and shoulder) and other acute injuries (including trauma and sports injuries). He treats elbow and wrist injuries.

Paul has a special interest in the injured athlete. Whether the athlete is elite or recreational he uses an approach of advanced surgical techniques and multidisciplinary rehabilitation services to achieve a timely return to sport.

Paul is married to Liz who is a General Practitioner. They are lucky to have two active young boys who certainly keep them on their toes.

Subspecialty Training

Paul has subspecialised in Shoulder and Knee Surgery. In 2010 and 2011 he underwent further training in Europe. He was awarded fellowships at an international training center being the first surgeon from Australia to be selected for Knee and Shoulder Fellowships at the Sports Surgery Clinic in Dublin, Ireland which he completed under Mr Ray Moran and Mr Hannan Mullett. He treated elite level athletes including players from the Irish Rugby Team, Gaelic footballers and hurlers. In this period he also completed observerships in Belgium and France.

Private and Public Practice

As a part of his private work with Coastal Orthopaedic Group he operates at Bethesda Hospital in Claremont, St John of God Murdoch, Peel Health Campus and Hollywood Private Hospital in Nedlands. Paul is also committed to the Public Health System and training the future generation of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is a consultant in Orthopaedic Surgery & Trauma at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Workers Compensation

Treatment of work related upper and lower limb injuries comprises a significant percentage of Paul’s caseload. His mission is to return workers to their pre-injury duties utilising advanced surgical technique, multidisciplinary rehabilitation and progressive return to work programs. He is qualified to perform permanent impairment assessments in accordance to the AMA Guides 5th edition and Workcover WA Guide 4th edition.
